Science Olympiad!

By Alyssa Locascio
Science Olympiad had a great year this year! On February 4th, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity went down to Grayslake Invitational Tournament that was hosted by Grayslake Middle School, and they did a fantastic job and had a blast! On March 16th, many of our students and a few teachers, Mrs. Arens and Mr.Shearer, did great at the Rockford sectional! They won eleven first place events, five second place events, two third place events, three fourth place events, and last by not least, our Junior Varsity Team won SIXTEEN first place events! On top of all of that, they also won the special spirit award! More recently, on April 22nd, the team won 5th place in the state tournament out of the fourth-six other schools! Plus, there were 23 individual medals. Our students did excellent by taking home eight of them! The students clearly love what they do and do a great job at it!

It was the Friday before spring break, so all of the kids were very anxious to get out of school. When there was about an hour left, all students were led into the gymnasium for a pep assembly. The school play this spring is High School Musical. Auditions were on the 21st and 22nd of March and were open to all students! In the auditions, everyone had to sing 30 seconds of a song of their choice and had to read a part of the script. Soon, the callback list was up! There was a regular callback and a dance callback. 25 students made the regular callback, and 10 students made the dance callback.

December 2012

On Sunday, December 16th, the big cheer and pom competition, The Hawthorn Invitational, took place at Middle South. There was so much talent squished into a little three minute performance. Sadly, North just barely fell short to South. Even though a girl fell at South, they still managed to get 1st place. North got 3rd place, but it was still a great accomplishment because it wasn’t about winning, it was about being a team and they definitely accomplished that.

Art Class

By Alyssa L. 7th grade

January 2013

Ms. Schultz and Mrs.Ring teamed up to make an awesome art class this semester! Ms.Shultz is going to become an art teacher when she finishes college! Before she can do that, she must practice being a teacher. So, she is our new student teacher! Before coming to MSN, she worked with elementary students, but she told our class she preferred middle schoolers. So far, all of the students like her! Ms.Shultz made up the projects for 2nd trimester art class students. They included creativeness, fun, and also teaching lessons on how cubism works and how to do it! On the last day of art, she presented most of her amazing art work! For some of the art, she presented it on a slideshow of pictures. For the rest, she brought it in! She let us hold and see everything up close and she told us about some interesting art careers. It was so cool! Lauren G., one of my artistic friends, who was in my art class, said “What I like about art is it has something you can take home and share with people physically. In a lot of other classes, you can’t really do that as much”. She later explained how you can express yourself with art creatively. Art class and art in general is a blast and might turn out being your special talent! Try it, you never know!

Poinsettia Fun

By Anya C. 7th grade

December 2012

In the 17th century, a botanist named Juan Balme, noted in his research a plant called the poinsettia. The poinsettia scientific name is the Euphorbia Pulcherrima, in other words it means, very beautiful, which was given to by Wilenow, a German botanist. Later on, Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the very first ambassador to Mexico, went to Mexico and because of his fascination with botany he introduced the american elm to Mexico. While he was in Mexico, he happened upon a beautiful plant, and took clippings from it back to the U.S.A. This plant was later on named after Mr.Poinsett.

A Special, Fun Friday

By Alyssa L.
Middle North
November 2012

Did you go Black Friday shopping? Why or why not? Some people love to go Black Friday shopping for great sales and discounts. A lot of people will do anything to have a free or cheap purchase! Some people will even wait overnight at their favorite stores! Most people like to go at midnight while others just go the next morning! They have a lot more selection and better buys when you go at midnight though. Although, if you go the next morning, you can still have great buys but not as good as the other ones! You also get a smaller selection most of the time! Don’t worry though, if you did not go or do not like Black Friday, you can still get great deals online, at the mall, or/and at many stores before all the holidays! The sales on Black Friday at the stores are much better overall though because you save the most money! The holidays (like Christmas, Hanukkah, etc...) are all coming up so run out fast, grab your cash and SHOP till you DROP!
