(Sorry for this late article, but I still think this will be an interesting piece! :P )
Last month, the two Hawthorn Middle Schools hosted the Hawthorn Spirit Invitational at VHHS. It was an exciting cheer and pom competition for many area middle schools. Both South and North poms and cheer squads (and their coaches, like the ahhhhmazing Mrs. Masini, South Cheer Coach, who just happens to be this newspaper’s south sponsor) did well and should be congratulated.
The Results:
POM-
1st place: Woodlawn
2nd place: Hawthorn South
3rd place: Deerpath
PARTICIPANTS: Carl Sandburg, Daniel Wright, Fremont, Hawthorn North, Lake Bluff, Oak Grove, Twin Groves.
CHEER-
1st place: Fremont
2nd place: Daniel Wright
3rd place: Hawthorn South (by 0.02 points!!!!!)
PARTICIPANTS: Winston Campus, Hawthorn North
As a member of the South cheer squad, I got a first-eye view of the competition, the drama, and the tension in the air. Some interesting facts were (in roughly chronological order):
1. I have to admit, the beginning of the CARL SANDBURG POMS routine was just fabulous. It was to the theme of America’s Next Top Model.
2. The fact that DANIEL WRIGHT POMS chose a mix of summer tunes when it was below zero outside.
3. How absolutely realistic FREMONT POMS robot dance was and how absolutely big their hair was.
4. HAWTHORM MIDDLE NORTH POM’s mix was really cute, and the ending gets kudos.
5. The WHOLE HAWTHORN SOUTH POMS performance was just AHHHHHMAZING! (I have to put that in or else Hannah will get mad!)
6. TWIN GROVE POMS’ umm, interesting, rodeo-inspired (complete with faux horseback riding) dance to Nobody’s Perfect. However, their kickline to the Cupid Shuffle was just uber-cute!
7. FREMONT CHEER’s tumbling.
8. The WHOLE SOUTH CHEER Routine espes. the FABULOUS pyramid!!!!!!
9. How the whole SOUTH CHEER squad got their cheek tattoos on ten minutes prior to performance.
10. also, HAWTHORN NORTH CHEER should be commended for the amount of work they put in. It really showed. Their dancing was amazing.
If you like to see the whole Invitational plus special South Extra Cuts come see me and I’ll lend you the DVD. Holla!
P.S. A very special congrats to Hannah, my fellow co-editor, who is always stuck with all the work!
